Happy Memories     Sung by Rena Uehara

Lyrics: Naoko Sutani / Composition: Shinya Ishikawa / Arrangement: Michio Kinugasa

How many days will pass, how many months

Before I can forget this memory?

It was a precious, happy memory

Of being so in love that I could barely breathe

Slender fingertips brushing back my hair

The tint hasn’t faded from the places we touched

To keep us from rewinding to that day, that moment, when we met

I can never see you again, while we live under the same sky

It won’t disappear with time or distance

All I can do is flee from place to place, pursued by this memory

It was a precious, happy memory

Of being so in love that you were all I could see

I just nodded at whatever you said

With your eyes still gazing straight at me

To keep us from returning to the path that we shared

I will never see you again, while we live under the same sky

Slender fingertips brushing back my hair

The tint hasn’t faded from the places we touched

To keep us from rewinding to that day, that moment, when we met

I can never see you again, while we live under the same sky

Love Out of Reach (Chiaki Version)        Sung by Chiaki Izumi

Lyrics: Haruki Kitahara / Composition: Kazusa Touma / Arrangement: Kazusa Touma

Are you playing the loner?

I found myself wondering why

Before I knew it

I was drawn to you more than anyone

How do I reflect my heart in this mirror?

If I keep feeling this hopeless love

Will it show itself one day?

Until that hazy answer comes into view

My love won’t go anywhere

The day I first spoke to you

And you turned to me

You were so dazzling

That I couldn’t look straight at you

How do I trace myself into your heart?

If I keep feeling this unfulfilled love

Will the day come when it appears?

Give me one little glimpse of that hazy answer

And I know my love will come alive

How do I reflect my heart in this mirror?

If I keep feeling this hopeless love

Will it show itself one day?

Until that hazy answer comes into view

My love won’t go anywhere

Gentle Lies                  Sung by Rena Uehara

Lyrics: Naoko Sutani / Composition: Junya Matsuoka / Arrangement: Junya Matsuoka

At the café where we always met, the corner store where we always stopped

Somehow, at some point, I stopped remembering you

The day that we parted, you promised me

That, in our next life, you would stay with me forever

Those final, gentle lies are my greatest treasure

Even now I feel like my wounded heart is healing

The snowy sky is painfully beautiful, because it’s your sky, too

I could hate and envy the one you chose

But no matter how I try, I could never be her

The day that we parted, you promised me

You would never forget that you loved me most of all

Those final, gentle lies will be my treasure forever

Even now I feel like my wounded heart is healing

I look up to the sky and pray that you will always be happy

As I smiled and nodded at your lies, I was the biggest liar of all

Those final, gentle lies are my greatest treasure

Even now I feel like my wounded heart is healing

The snowy sky is painfully beautiful, because it’s your sky, too

I’ll never forget your gentle lies

Loving Heart                            Sung by Akari Tsuda

Lyrics: Naoko Sutani / Composition: Michio Kinugasa / Arrangement: Michio Kinugasa

I really let my guard down

Thinking you were boring

But now, somehow

You’re all I see

My feelings of affection pile up softly like the snow

The day may come

When we choose our own dreams and part

But I believe

We will reach the same future

The affection in my heart turns to love

You don’t spoil me

There are no words I want to hear

But if you hold me tight and want me

That’s all I need

My feelings of love pile up softly like the snow

As we cross over these walls

Even if we hurt each other

We’ll feel all kinds of happiness

Together with the pain

Our loving hearts become one

Our feelings of love pile up softly like the snow

The day may come

When we choose our own dreams and part

But I believe

We will reach the same future

My loving heart becomes eternal

My Heart is Always With You        Sung by Akari Tsuda

Lyrics: Naoko Sutani / Composition: Naoya Shimokawa / Arrangement: Michio Kinugasa

The sky looks like it’s about to cry

A cold wind tells me snow is on the way

I don’t want to leave… but without saying a word

I let go of your hand and wave goodbye

I watch and watch as you vanish into the distance

Even though anxiety bears down on me

My heart will always be with you

Filling these lonely nights with happiness

My heart will always be with you, so I want you to know

That even when I can’t see you, I’ll be okay

Under the weeping sky

The cold wind that spoke to me passes me by

I squeeze what’s left of your warmth tightly

Shut it away in my pocket so I don’t lose it

My heart will always, always be with you

Keeping me company on lonely nights

My heart will always, always be with you, so I know

That even when I can’t see you, I can laugh and say, “I’m fine”

The weakness I hide by pretending to be fine

If showing you would mean losing you, I’ll stay and keep pretending

Maybe your heart feels me close by

And you’re looking up at the snowy sky, feeling the same way I do

My heart will always be with you, so I want you to know

That even when I can’t see you, I’ll be okay

The Magic of Time                Sung by Setsuna Ogiso

Lyrics: Haruki Kitahara / Composition: Kazusa Touma / Arrangement: Kazusa Touma

Suffering and smiling go hand in hand

When I’m with you, I can believe that much

Even to a bare and withered tree

Miracles can happen

Look—so much white light

Makes cherry blossoms bloom in the middle of winter

I know my wish will come true—I’ll close my eyes

And speak the magic of time once again, from zero

I’ve spent so many restless days, but now

I feel I could look at the world with kinder eyes

Even to a bare and withered tree

Miracles can happen

Look—shining inside me

Cherry blossoms bloom in the middle of winter

I know my wish will come true, because it will get through

If I speak the magic of time once again, from here

A future with you falls down, glittering

Forever and ever, I want to cherish this

I know my wish will come true—I’ll close my eyes

And speak the magic of time once again, from zero

Once again, from zero

Lyrics: Naoya Shimokawa, Naoko Sutani

Closing            Sung by Rena Uehara

Lyrics: Naoya Shimokawa & Naoko Sutani / Composition: Naoya Shimokawa / Arrangement: Michio Kinugasa

Still clinging to days that won’t come back—one day, yes, one day

Before my weak heart could be caught I softly pushed you away

Ah, this feeling hurts too much

Who are you? Where have you been hiding?

Terrified and hanging my head

The real me has been waiting

That season again—the night sky was white, and you were there

I was glad you didn’t touch me, but my heart ached

I don’t want to let you go, I don’t want to leave you, but I’ve been on the verge of giving up

I can’t fall in love any more, the pain of loss is too great to bear

Still clinging to days that won’t come back—some day, yes, some day

All I need is to have you beside me, even though I can’t say it

Now, I have to hold my head up and walk

The real me has to realize

That season again—I’m looking up at this same sky

I know what’s been hurt can never go back to the way it was

But I don’t want to let you go, I don’t want to leave you, I’m not giving up now

Your heart might be hurt, but I can’t lie to the way I feel

Find me one of these days, find me with a smile on my face

Just stay with me and tell me that you’ll never leave me alone again

Still clinging to days that won’t come back, I know, yes, I know

If I don’t accept how I felt that day I won’t be able to move on

I don’t want to let you go, I don’t want to leave you—my single wish

Is to make you know I love you, even though I refuse to say it

Commentary

To begin, thank you very much for purchasing White Album 2 Original Soundtrack: Closing.

I’m Naoya Shimokawa, and I handle sound production among other things. First, since this is a CD, I will offer some commentary on the sound front. When it comes to sound, this project was the first Aquaplus title that stuck to “No constraints, we’re going to produce as much as we need” as its style. With all of the BGM, vocal tracks, and sound effects together, it wound up being a colossal investment, but—I’m deeply emotional over it. I can say, unequivocally, that I’m glad to have done it. When it came to my own new songs, I was in charge of the three ending vocal tracks for Coda, and I had some trouble with producing the variations between them. One song holding true to the world of White Album 2 as was begun with “Love Out of Reach,” one song that was something new but kept the vibe of the previous game, White Album, and one that followed in the footsteps of “Powder Snow,” as requested by the writer, Maruto-san—that division took a lot of work. But the support of all the players following its release has given me motivation for projects to come. Above all, I am grateful to the music staff, who put every effort into enlivening the story. And I am grateful to the players who support this title.

Now, I’m going to digress a bit, but personally (though it may not seem like a personal opinion) I want as many people as possible to play this title. Ideally, I would want it to keep being promoted for the next ten years. Maybe I’m tooting my own horn, but—granted personal preferences—I believe I could call it a masterpiece. There may be some who would shy away from it on account of its genre, but I firmly believe there are components of it that would have to be acknowledged as an excellent game even if the plot didn’t suit one’s tastes. What I’m saying now is a request to all those who appreciate this work in the same way that I do (for those who love White Album 2 enough to buy its soundtrack, and, yes, for my own sake, on a sneakier level).

In order to keep this title growing for ten years (maybe that’s a slight exaggeration), your help will be indispensable. Of course, our company and I will do our utmost, too! I want to create an environment that allows as many people as possible to play it, so please help me proselytize!! (ha ha)

I earnestly pray that the day will never come when White Album 2 is called “an unknown masterpiece.”

Naoya Shimokawa

White Album is a big title for Leaf/Aquaplus, and I have always been cognizant of the high degree of perfection in its musical landscape.

In works belonging to a series that is, in a sense, complete, the pressure to avoid any loss in quality tends to lead one to focus on “protecting” when it comes to composing music. This time, however, I recall keeping the mindset not of “protecting,” but rather “attacking,” as much as possible, as I worked.

When it came to writing the music for the second part, I believe my head was operating full-throttle in White Album Mode.

I was so completely focused that if some other job had come in while I was working on White Album, I doubt I would have been able to do it.

Junya Matsuoka

I’m Shinya Ishikawa. I handled the White Album 2 theme songs, as well as a number of BGM tracks.

“Happy Memories”: With the opening theme of Introductory Chapter, “Love Out of Reach,” the image for White Album 2 theme songs was somewhat solidified, so I tried not to stray too far from that, while still adding some changes, as I composed.

“Snowfalls”: It was specified that this track should be similar in mood to “As It Was Then,” but the melody came out warmer.

“Melting Hearts”: The piano plays the main role in this track as well. According to the other music staff, as soon as you start listening to it, the melody makes it clear that it’s one of mine. (ha ha)

My point of attention when it came to producing the BGM for Closing Chapter was to give a sense of scale, something broader than the BGM for the first part. The stage itself broadens out from the high school drama of the first part, so I wanted the music to have a greater expanse, too. However, I did this not by increasing the number of instruments, or by making the tracks more bombastic, but by casually increasing the breadth of the melodies and sound.

Also, as my work progressed, in bringing more breadth and depth to the tracks, I began to try to express elusive moods, and the boundlessness of the world of the human heart, even in simple, piano-focused compositions. I believe tracks like “Speaking Out” and “Answer” were produced through that sort of course.  Strangely, this delicate type of direction is an element that doesn’t come to mind if one doesn’t progress to a certain point in the production with instrument in hand. It’s something one hears about often—the phenomenon of “letting the work guide you.”

On the other hand, while I did also aim to make the ending song, “Loving Heart,” something dramatic with a sense of scale, I tried to get its “breadth” to express the exact opposite of “elusiveness”—the strength of heart of a person who believes in something.

The BGM in White Album has an extraordinary sense of unity, but I hope you enjoy the subtle differences in the personalities of the tracks, too.
