Lyrics

Love Out of Reach   Sung by Rena Uehara

Lyrics: Naoko Sutani / Composition: Shinya Ishikawa / Arrangement: Junya Matsuoka

Are you playing the loner?

I found myself wondering why

Before I knew it

I was drawn to you more than anyone

How do I reflect my heart in this mirror?

If I keep feeling this hopeless love

Will it show itself one day?

Until that hazy answer comes into view

My love won’t go anywhere

The day I first spoke to you

And you turned to me

You were so dazzling

That I couldn’t look straight at you

How do I trace myself into your heart?

If I keep feeling this unfulfilled love

Will the day come when it appears?

Give me one little glimpse of that hazy answer

And I know my love will come alive

How do I reflect my heart in this mirror?

If I keep feeling this hopeless love

Will it show itself one day?

Until that hazy answer comes into view

My love won’t go anywhere

After All (Feelings Spelled Out)   Sung by Rena Uehara

Lyrics: Miu / Composition: Shinya Ishikawa / Arrangement: Michio Kinugasa

A flock of birds takes off from the earth

Where is my lonely heart supposed to go?

I still have the kisses we shared that day

Our matching heartbeats as we held each other tightly

The summer I spent in love with you is over

And the memories it brought are returning to the sky

You were so dazzling and kind, and I loved you

I’m still searching for your voice and your dreams

Stay just a little longer, just like this

Only the lights adorning the weekend streets

Wrap up my heart as it bleeds through

Lovers sway in silhouette

Before I know it, longing overtakes me

I think of the last autumn I spent with you

Of the footsteps long gone, of your hands, of tomorrow

Being happy by your side was everything

The confusion and loneliness still show themselves

But soon enough I’ll forget it all, just like this

I call your dear name, but the wind just sweeps it away

Taking me far, far from the past, from that day

Some day—I know it—I’ll wait for winter

Follow my memories back to this place

More than anyone, more than ever

I’ll sing of you, even if the words never reach you

Feel what I feel and and believe in a new time

Lyrics

Twinkle Snow           Sung by Akari Tsuda

Lyrics: Naoko Sutani / Composition: Junya Matsuoka / Arrangement: Michio Kinugasa

We talked and talked until it got dark

Beneath a clouded winter sky

I don’t know when it started, but every time we part

I just want to stay with you a little longer—which really means…

Softly

The snow piles up on the feelings of love that I found tonight

Will I find this dear feeling again tomorrow?

I want to shine more brightly for you than I did today

As I gaze up at the flickering sky, the snow kisses me gently

If you find a girlfriend, somewhere along the line

Will you keep talking to me like this?

Some day, your girlfriend will come first

I hate the thought of you leaving me—which really means…

Softly

The snow piles up on the feelings of love that I found tonight

Will I find this half-weeping feeling again tomorrow?

I want to shine more brightly for you than I did today

As I gaze up at the flickering sky, I’ll kiss the snow back, gently

I’m growing up as I discover all these feelings

The snow will wrap me up protectively until the budding season

Twinkling

The snow piles up on all the feelings I found this year

Come spring, a new me will start to sprout

Hoping to shine more brightly for you than I did this year

As I gaze up at the flickering sky

I’ll make my wish to the snow, pray to the snow, kiss the snow, gently

Acoustic & electric guitar: Hideo Mitsuda

Commentary

Some time has passed since I wrote these tracks for White Album 2, so I’m listening to them again as I write this commentary.

This could really be said of every aspect of the sound, but what I was most conscious of as I worked was the sense of temperature. The chill of winter, the transparency of the air, warmth that gives one relief in the midst of the cold (like warming up in front of a fireplace, for example)—I recall using these sorts of images in order to express the contrast between “cold” and “warmth” as I composed.

“Love Out of Reach”

When I heard Ishikawa-san’s demo of this song, the sound of it seemed to be saying, “Arrange me this way!” I was aware of a slightly downcast feeling. The compatibility with Uehara-san’s singing voice is perfect, too!

“Twinkle Snow”

The melody for this one had me going, “Yes, I’ve nailed it,” for the first time in a while. At first I was dithering over whether to do the arrangement myself as well, but figured I might try bringing someone else’s view into it, and requested that Kinugasa-san arrange it. The arrangement fit my image of it perfectly. Maybe I also managed to tell Kinugasa-san, “Arrange it this way!” through sound… (lol)

I tried to show some temperature variation within the course of a single song here. The A-melody gives a slightly cold impression, the B-melody raises the temperature a little, and the chorus brings the warmth right in.

Junya Matsuoka

White Album 2 also makes use of music from its predecessor, White Album. I remember working hard at composing it fourteen years ago, in my younger days. I apologize for singing my own praises here, but even as I listen to it now, I find myself thinking I did a pretty good job of evoking the atmosphere of the game through its BGM.

The opening theme, “Love Out of Reach,” was a bit of a difficult delivery, since I was worrying over how to change the image from that of the White Album opening. Actually, I think Rena-san’s vocals as they appeared in the game served to make it tug at the heartstrings all the more.

Shinya Ishikawa

First, to all of you who were hoping to get this soundtrack, thank you for waiting! (I’ve been waiting for it, too!)

Thanks to all of your voices, we were able to release the soundtrack. I think I can say this as someone whose involvement was on the level of an assistant, but I feel like with White Album 2’s themes and literary style, the effectiveness of the music is showcased extremely well. There’s been an immense response to the sound side of things, and I’m sure the singers and all the sound staff must have felt it, too.

Now, regarding the part where I was involved: I actually put out a very small episode on Aquaplus Members, and it left me a little at a loss. To summarize for those who aren’t able to view it, “Slapstick Street” and “Boy Meets Girl and Girl” were actually originally a single track that wound up splitting and developing into twins partway through.

Having several different aspects working in unison isn’t cutting corners, it gives a sense of unity! That’s very important! And while I’m saying it for a second time, I will make a point later of sitting on the floor and holding my knees as I ponder.

Maybe it’s because I finished these tracks just in time for the Christmas season, but I feel like I managed to fit plenty of the “winter break” mood into them. What do you think?

Kazuhide Nakagami

I began my music production for White Album 2 by remaking BGM from the previous game, White Album. At the time that White Album was born, I wasn’t a part of Leaf’s sound team yet, so I recall feeling simultaneous gratitude and pressure when it turned out I was going to be remaking it. Also, with regard to the new tracks, I still endeavored to keep true to the world of White Album as I wrote. In that sense, the creation process had an extremely clear-cut concept, so I feel like even with everything gathered together on a single CD as a soundtrack, it stands as a fully-formed album.

Regarding “After All,” it was a song from one of Rena Uehara-san’s albums that had already been released, but I listened to Ishikawa-san’s demo of it from the composition stage, found it a very good song, and knew that when it came time to arrange it, I wanted to give it an intro that would really leave an impression. This could be a matter of my own bias, but I believe in the theory that good songs always have impressive intros, so I made my arrangement start with a striking, fleeting sort of piano part; the fact that President Shimokawa’s direction introduced it to the world of White Album 2, which led the song to grow further, was, I think, a very timely coincidence, and deeply appreciated.

Thinking about it now, at the time, I had no idea that what I was setting about would only be the first chapter of the story.
