Introductory Chapter

Text:                                    Prologue

I heard a song, traversing the cold wind—

Joining the guitar that I played that evening in the music room.

Joining the piano that someone, someone whose face I didn’t know, played in the room next to me.

That voice from the roof, high, clear, and resonant as a bell, connected our scattered melodies.

That late autumn was where it began.

Someone fell in love with someone.

We all gave it all we had.

We all plunged ahead with powerful sentiments in our hearts.

Single-mindedly, earnestly, honestly—

We all joined together, on the deepest level, and found something irreplaceable.

And so, someone fell in love with someone.

A love one step too late, a love that should never have happened.

And that winter, the snow piled up and covered over all of our sins.

Then, at last, as the snow melted in spring, our punishment fell upon us.

Footer:                                This story is split up into three chapters. This section contains information regarding the first section, Introductory Chapter. In this chapter, a story unfolds in which the protagonist, Haruki, and the two heroines forge and deepen bonds through band rehearsals.

Love Out of Reach

Vocals: Rena Uehara                    Composition: Shinya Ishikawa

Lyrics: Naoko Sutani                     Arrangement: Junya Matsuoka

Lyrics:                                  Are you pretending to be alone?

I couldn’t help but wonder why

Then, before I realized it

You fascinated me more than anyone

How can I show my heart in the mirror?

Though my love may never reach you

The day could come when it starts to show

Until that hazy answer comes into view

My love will remain frozen

The day that I first spoke to you

You turned to look at me

You were so dazzling

That I had to look away

How do I trace myself into your heart?

Though my love may never reach you

The day could come when it starts to show

If I could see the tiniest bit of that hazy answer

Then my love might come alive

How can I show my heart in the mirror?

Though my love may never reach you

The day could come when it starts to show

Until that hazy answer comes into view

My love will remain frozen

Header:                               Story Summary

Text:                                    Haruki, the protagonist, is a member of the Light Music Club at Houjou High School. The plan had been for the club to perform at the upcoming school festival, but turmoil stirred up by their female vocalist has caused the other members to quit one by one. However, for reasons no one would expect, he manages to bring in the school idol, Setsuna, as a new singer, and Setsuna persuades Kazusa, a pianist with genius-level musical talent, to join as well. As the festival presses nearer, they work to increase the quality of their performance. They bond quickly as they rehearse together, but when Haruki and Setsuna ultimately begin dating, that relationship starts to collapse…

Left dialogue:                    Setsuna

“No, thank you. And I’m sorry, Touma-san. You’ve been working so hard for all our sakes, and I shouldn’t have said that to you…”

Left caption:                      Setsuna is terrified in the extreme of being left out. This trauma arose from a bitter, painful experience in her middle school years.

Right dialogue:                 Setsuna

“Though I wasn’t planning on being the one to make the first move myself…”

Right caption:                   After the school festival concert is over, Setsuna confesses to Haruki. This action is the result of a certain something she witnessed.

Header:                              Characters

Left 3:

Haruki Kitahara

The first-term representative of Class 3-E, in charge of second guitar and odd tasks for the Light Music Club. His natural instinct is to help those in trouble, and he is almost too ready to offer a hand. As an honor student and a skilled speaker, he often talks people over with flawless ideological reasoning. Ever since he began his third year, he has been curious about Kazusa, his seat neighbor, and repeatedly attempts to talk to her in spite of her cold attitude toward him.

Setsuna Ogiso

The school idol, and reigning champion of the “Miss Houjou High School” competition for two years running. Her personality is actually quite ordinary, but once she gained her fame she began to worry over her image, and she hides her true self when engaging with others. Unable to tell anyone how much she loves singing, she has become the “solo karaoke queen,” spending hours and hours shut away singing alone in karaoke rooms. The one person to whom she has ever shown her real self is Haruki, and she takes an interest in him, which gradually develops into an attraction to his sociable manner and strong sense of responsibility.

Kazusa Touma

Haruki’s classmate, and the daughter of internationally renowned pianist, Youko Touma. She entered the Music Department at the beginning of high school, but certain circumstances led her to transfer into General Education for her third year. She is a delinquent, poor of conduct and rude of speech, but she is also a great beauty with a genius-level musical sense. She stubbornly refuses contact with those around her, unable to get on with her teachers and classmates, and Haruki is the only one in her class who ever talks to her. Her habit of showing up late has put her graduation prospects in jeopardy, and Haruki attempts to help her out whenever he finds the chance.

Right 8:

Takeya Iizuka

The leader and main guitarist of the Light Music Club. Haruki’s best friend, and childhood friends with Io as well. His looks and manner make him popular with girls, and it’s been said that he has a girlfriend in every class.

Io Mizusawa

Setsuna’s classmate. Childhood friends with Takeya, and friends with Haruki through him. She is the captain of the basketball team, and her easy-going personality has made her popular with the first- and second-year girls.

Chikashi Hayasaka

Haruki’s classmate. Technically the leader of the committee behind the Miss Houjou contest, but his friend Haruki is so reliable that he ends up shunting most of the work onto him.

Takahiro Ogiso

Setsuna’s highly inquisitive younger brother. Currently a third year in middle school, and apparently hopes to attend Houjou High School like his sister.

Youko Touma

Kazusa’s mother, an internationally renowned pianist. Seeing Kazusa’s performance in the high school festival show leads her to reaffirm her daughter’s talent.

Chiaki Izumi

Takeya’s classmate. Has never interacted with Haruki, but begins to take an interest after seeing the Light Music Club’s performance.

Setsuna’s Mother

Setsuna’s calm-mannered mother. Highly sensitive to her children’s changes, but chooses to watch over them warmly, rather than butt in too far.

Setsuna’s Father

A somewhat strict father to Setsuna. Makes it a rule to settle family matters through full-family discussions.

Closing Chapter

Text:                                    Prologue

I heard a song, traversing the cold wind—

On a dusky campus, in an empty cafeteria, by the window of a desolate school building.

The song that I thought had been frozen three years ago.

It melted, stirred by passion, stitched together with pure feeling, a song of deception.

The winter when we had been three was far away now, and we had spent season after season alone, one and one.

That late autumn was when it picked back up again.

The hideous scars from the bond I attempted to rip apart had not dried, and yet, something had begun. I felt as though something might be about to change.

Our two isolated melodies drew us to one another, hurt us, and, once again, summoned a new melody.

A new winter would arrive soon.

A winter when I couldn’t be with one, a winter without the other.

I don’t care about “White Album.”

There’s nothing for me to sing any more.

There will be no love out of reach.

I’ll never love anyone again.

Footer:                                Betraying Setsuna, parting from Kazusa. Three years have passed since these pivotal events in Haruki’s life. Closing Chapter, the second section, tells the story of Haruki and Setsuna, now university students, as well as three new heroines.

Happy Memories

Vocals: Rena Uehara                    Composition: Shinya Ishikawa

Lyrics: Naoko Sutani                     Arrangement: Michio Igasa

Lyrics:                                  How many days do I have to pass

Before I can forget all about this?

It was a love that took my breath away

Such a happy, precious memory

Your slender fingertips brushed back my hair

The color has yet to fade from all the places we touched

Let me never rewind to that time, the day that we met

Though we live beneath the same sky, I will never touch you again

It never vanishes, no matter where I go, how long it’s been

All I do is run from place to place, pursued by these memories

It was a love that let me see only you

Such a happy, precious memory

All I do is nod as you speak

With your eyes still fixed on me

Let me never turn back to the road that we shared

Though we live beneath the same sky, I will never touch you again

Your slender fingertips brushed back my hair

The color has yet to fade from all the places we touched

Let me never rewind to that time, the day that we met

Though we live beneath the same sky, I will never touch you again

Header:                               Story Summary

Text:                                    Haruki has spent the past three years dragging his betrayal of Setsuna behind him, while Setsuna has maintained an unstable distance from him. Their relationship has been awkward ever since they began college. As he attempts to stifle his own complicated emotions by keeping himself constantly busy, Haruki transfers to the Literature Department, further deepening the trench between them. In the midst of all this, several women appear who take an interest in him, and Haruki’s “sincerity” comes to torment them as well. Eventually, through help from those around them, Haruki and Setsuna meet for a date on Christmas Eve, but Setsuna rejects him at the last minute.

Left dialogue:                    Koharu

“You must have had something to do, right? Something pretty important.”

Left caption:                      Even while he’s wrapped up in things with Setsuna, Haruki continues to place importance on sincerity with others. This behavior invites a variety of misunderstandings.

Right dialogue:                 Setsuna

“What am I supposed to do, faced with a passionate love letter like this? How am I supposed to respond…?”

Right caption:                   Setsuna makes up her mind to accept Haruki and invites him to a hotel with her. However, she has a run-in with the feelings for Kazusa that remain within him, and immediately pushes him away.

Header:                               Characters

Characters L-R:

Heroine

Koharu Sugiura

Haruki’s junior, a third-year at Houjou High School. Helpful to the point of pushiness, unable to pass by anyone in trouble or need, the type who feels responsible for absolutely everything. In her status as first-term class representative, her excellent grades, and her reliability among her classmates, she is the very picture of Haruki as a girl, and Takeya even calls her “Mini-Haruki.”

It is in an attempt to resolve the romantic troubles of her friend, Mihoko, that she first makes contact with Haruki; after that, when she takes a part-time job at Goodies to save up money for a graduation trip with her best friends, she happens to run into him again. They begin spending time together as trainee and mentor, and through that she becomes attracted to him.

Heroine

Chiaki Izumi

A third-year in the Literature Department at Houjou University. As a modern university student who spends her school life leaning on others, her messing around has led her to become negligent in her reports, putting her promotion to the next school year in jeopardy. While her appearance is well-proportioned, she tends toward speech and behavior that are decidedly unfeminine, such as sleeping in a sleeping bag on campus, and is one of the few members of the opposite sex with whom Haruki, with his trauma regarding women, can interact freely. They get to know each other when Haruki transfers to the Literature Department, and after that point, his reliability causes her to get attached to him. She appears to live a carefree life without thinking much about anything, but now and then she shows an unexpected side—taking precisely the right action based her reading of the situation, or making sharp observations that give the impression that she’s figured everything out.

Heroine

Mari Kazaoka

A magazine editor at Kaiou Publishing, where Haruki works part time. She has a surprising work ethic, and none of her contemporaries at the company comes close to her workload. She is considered to have promising prospects for the future, but she is also the type who is too “high up” for most men to want to approach her, and she herself is so absorbed in her work that she has gone quite a while without any love affairs. She is Haruki’s direct superior, and values his competence and strong sense of responsibility highly. Perhaps for that very reason, she offers him advice in the private realm of things as well as work, but his excessive appetite for work and unreserved remarks start to play at her, and her interest in him as an employee is slowly painted over with interest in him as a man.

Heroine

Setsuna Ogiso

A third-year in the Politics and Economics Department at Houjou University. Her original aim was the English Literature Department, but upon learning that Haruki had chosen Politics and Economics, she chose the same. Regarding the events that previously took place between her and Haruki, each of them feels it to be their own responsibility, and will not change that mindset no matter how much others try to convince them otherwise. She makes efforts to draw near to Haruki again, a little at a time, but part of her finds relief in keeping enough distance to avoid getting hurt, and that inner conflict is still tormenting her. She does her utmost to avoid drawing attention at the university, and turns down any invitation she receives from men, but her beauty has become even more polished than it was in her high school years, and she is recognized as an idol on campus.

Page 029_025

Top left 3:

Haruki Kitahara

Has been living alone since beginning college, and manages his living expenses by dedicating every spare moment he has to part-time jobs. Originally he belonged to the same academic department as Setsuna, but feeling a sense of future prospects in his job at Kaiou Publishing, he transferred to the Literature Department. Contact with Setsuna is painful for him, which is one of the reasons he has deliberately distanced himself from her. His pushy style of helpfulness has not died, and at the behest of his seminar professor, he has taken responsibility for the struggling student Chiaki, leading him to spend a good deal of time with her.

Takeya Iizuka

Haruki’s best friend for the past six years, starting in high school. Studies in the Politics and Economics Department at Houjou University. His laid-back personality and tendency toward several girlfriends at once are the same as in high school, but he does seem to have someone in particular he truly wants. He worries over Haruki and his trauma, and attempts to act as a go-between for him and Setsuna.

Io Mizusawa

Like Setsuna and Takeya, a third-year in the Politics and Economics Department at Houjou University. Is aware of Takeya’s feelings for her, but makes no move at responding to them, carrying on their relationship as usual. Similar to Takeya with Haruki, she shelves her own problems to focus on helping her friend Setsuna.

Top right 7:

Kazusa Touma

A pianist based in Vienna. Her talents at the piano are flourishing under Youko’s guidance, and she now lives with her mother abroad, practicing diligently day in and day out. She returns to Japan, accompanying Youko for a New Year’s Concert she’s playing, but leaves without seeing any of her friends.

Satou

Acting manager at Goodies, the diner where Haruki used to work part time. The actual manager is currently recuperating from a strained back, so he has been left in charge of the restaurant temporarily.

Kazumi Nakagawa

Floor chief at Goodies. Currently in vocational school, a year below Haruki, highly supportive when he was directing the restaurant; an exemplary employee.

Honda

Part-time employee at Goodies. Was once lectured by Haruki for slacking, and after that began working far more energetically whenever Haruki was around.

Mihoko Yada

A student at the cram school where Haruki works as a teacher. Upon learning that Haruki will be quitting before long, she attempts to confess her feelings to him, but he responds coldly.

Ako Sonoda

A friend and classmate of Koharu, Miho, and Sayuri. Has a quiet personality, and harbors secret feelings for her classmate, Takahiro.

Sayuri Shimizu

One of Koharu’s friends. When she catches wind of Koharu and Haruki spending time together, she jumps to the conclusion that Koharu has betrayed Mihoko and lashes out harshly at her.

Middle 6 L-R:

Tomo Yanagihara

One year below Haruki et al, and this year’s Miss Houjou University. Was never able to win the Miss Houjou High competition thanks to Setsuna, and still bears a grudge for that.

Sawako Amamiya

Mari’s rival and best friend since their school days, who works at a travel agency. When she and Mari were in high school, they were known as the “Rainstorm Duo.”

Hamada

A veteran editor at Kaiou. Speaks in a brusque manner, but genuinely cares for his employees. Easily won over by theoretical arguments, and seems to be outclassed by Mari.

Kizaki

An editor at Kaiou. Comes off as over-serious in his behavior, but is highly competent in carrying out his work. Spends a lot of time outside of the office on both work and personal matters.

Matsuoka

A newbie editor in his ninth month at Kaiou. Is often compared against Haruki by Mari and Hamada on the work front, perhaps because they are close in age.

Suzuki

An editor at Kaiou. Has an indifferent personality, always carries herself cheerfully, and readily steps in when Mari is taking Haruki to task.

Bottom 5 L-R:                   Uehara

Proprietor of the Watos Troupe. Was charmed by Chiaki’s stance and talent in acting, and founded the troupe for her. Has repeated so many years that he is now a seventh-year at the university.

Yoshida

A member of the Watos Troupe. Plays the part of Kazuki in the play “Sentiment Beyond Reach.” Was criticized brutally by Chiaki at first, but has acquired greater acting ability with time.

Tanaka

A member of the Watos Troupe. As an understudy for the one-in-a-million chance that Chiaki should ever be unable to appear onstage, she has been selected especially to play one of two heroines, and dedicates herself to rehearsing.

Takahiro Ogiso

Setsuna’s younger brother, a third-year at Houjou High School. Secretly holds great respect for his classmate, Koharu, and attempts to mediate when strife arises between her and her friends.

Setsuna’s mother

Has not heard from her daughter about the complications of her relationship with Haruki, but has noticed her crying to herself in secret, and looks carefully after her, both physically and emotionally.

Left dialogue:                    Chiaki

“Shouko Nagase. I’m a third year in the Business Department. Nice to meet you, Setsuna Ogiso-san.”

Left caption:                      Once you’ve fulfilled certain conditions, new text for Chiaki will be inserted throughout the chapter. Actions taken by Chiaki that Haruki never knew about will be made clear.

Right dialogue:                 A season for just the two of us is beginning.

Right caption:                   Once you have finished Setsuna’s Route in Closing Chapter, you will move automatically to the final chapter, Coda, which depicts Haruki’s story as an adult.

Header:                               Route Guide

Text:                                    Which Heroine Route you branch off to is decided by flags set for each of the three non-Setsuna heroines, plus Affection Ratings attached to each heroine. In general, in order to view the Route you’re aiming for, you’ll need to have the corresponding flag set to ON, and select options that raise that heroine’s Affection. There are options that will set designated flags to OFF, so be certain to refer frequently to the chart and make the appropriate choices. There is an exception: In order to view Setsuna’s Route, if, in addition to having Setsuna’s Affection at at least 5, you have also raised each of the other heroines’ Affection to at least 1, then you’ll need to set the Chiaki’s Route Flag to OFF at either Choice 9 or Choice 11.

In the following pages you will find the Common Route chart, centered around the episodes as listed in Scene Replay Mode, including Choices and the respective outcomes and effects of each option, plus the timing of Event CGs and Flag Checks. On page 031, you’ll find a list of choices and the endings to which they point, plus the additional texts, and page 032 gives the timing of Event CGs in each Heroine Route, so please use those as reference for your strategy.

Dialogue:                            1. Do what you want

  1. No, of course not

Koharu

“…Is that all right?”

Caption:                              With the right conditions met, additional text from Chiaki, Koharu, or Mari will be inserted. That said, sometimes those conditions require you to pick the option that doesn’t increase affection…

Box 1:                                  Flag settings at the start of Closing Chapter

The four flags in Closing Chapter are shown at the right. At the beginning, the flag for each Heroine Route other than Setsuna is set to ON, while the Chiaki’s True Route Flag, which is necessary to view “10. Chiaki Izumi’s Ending” in Chiaki’s Route, is set to OFF. Selecting certain options from specific choices will switch each of these flags between ON and OFF.

Initial flag settings

Chiaki’s Route: ON

Chiaki’s True Route: OFF

Mari’s Route: ON

Koharu’s Route: ON

Box 2:                                  Conditions for Chiaki’s True Ending

In order to select “1. I have no idea what to do with her” at this stage, you have to have progressed once through Chiaki’s Route (and viewed “11. Normal Ending 2”). If you replay Closing Chapter after that, you’ll be able to select that option, and following that, Chiaki’s additional text will be inserted. Also, if you play through Chiaki’s Route again with the Chiaki’s True Route Flag set to ON, you’ll be able to view Chiaki’s True Ending, “10. Chiaki Izumi’s Ending.”

Key:                                     Chart Key

-Name of episode as shown in Scene Replay Mode. Dates are also shown at the start of each episode.

-Flags that influence branches to a given heroine’s Route.

-Shows that a flag is set to ON.

Top box:                             Dates change according to Choices

Depending on which option you choose for Choices 8 and 9, certain Heroine Route Flags can be set to OFF, so pick carefully. Also, if you choose “2. Sorry, can we make it tomorrow?” for Choice 8, the dates on which 9 and 10 occur will be shifted by one day; similarly, if you pick “9. Talk a bit more” for Choice 9, the date for Choice 10 will shift by one. Furthermore, if you choose “1. All right, let’s do it today” for Choice 8 and then “2. If you pick the option at Choice 9 that leaves Chiaki’s Route Flag ON, then a Flag Check will run immediately following it. If you haven’t turned Mari’s Route Flag OFF at Choice 8, then Koharu’s Route Flag will turn OFF. In other words, at this point, flags for one or two of the three non-Setsuna Heroine Routes will be turned OFF.

Bottom right box:            Partial scene content change based on flag status

In the scene at Goodies involving buying movie tickets from Takeya, depending on your flag status at that point, certain elements will change. If Chiaki’s Route Flag is ON, Chiaki will flicker through the back of Haruki’s mind, while if that flag is OFF and Mari’s Route Flag is ON, dialogue regarding Mari will be shown. If both are OFF, dialogue regarding Koharu will be shown.

Dialogue:                            Chiaki

“But, y’know, if you’re ever like weirdly bored, or you can’t get your brain to settle down, you can just give me a call, okay?”

By choosing the number shown for each Choice, you can reach the corresponding ending (for blank entries, it makes no difference which you pick). There are more opportunities to raise Affection for Koharu and Setsuna than are necessary for their respective branches, so it’s possible to get those endings without following the table exactly. However, for Normal 2, Chiaki, and Mari, you must pick exactly according to the table, or you won’t be able to reach them. Also, you can see Normal 1 if the Chiaki’s Route Flag is left ON.

Header:                               Additional Text

Text explanations:            Additional Chiaki Text 1

Setsuna reluctantly goes to a party with guys from the Medical School. Unbeknownst to Haruki, Setsuna and Chiaki actually run into each other there. After helping Setsuna out, Chiaki falsely introduces herself as Shouko Nagase from the Business Department, and they have a conversation. This scene is inserted as Haruki and Koharu are looking for Setsuna together.

Additional Chiaki Text 2

As Haruki is pressed by the deadline for his Kazusa Touma Special Feature, and Koharu and Mari view the DVD of the high school concert, Chiaki visits the Watos Theatre Troupe to which she belongs. What is the purpose behind her telling Uehara, the proprietor of Watos, that she’s found the perfect partner…?

Additional Chiaki Text 3

While working on a report with Chiaki, Haruki makes dinner as usual. Takeya contacts him, and for some reason Chiaki leaves Haruki’s apartment. After that, Haruki drinks the night away with Takeya and Io. When Io wakes up in the morning, she realizes she’s in Haruki’s bathroom…

Additional Chiaki Text 4

The day after finally finishing her report, Chiaki leaves Haruki’s apartment and has a phone call with her mother. The night before, when she stayed over at Haruki’s apartment, she talked about having a complicated family situation and things not being great with her mother, but they actually seem very close, and there don’t appear to be any problems at all.

Additional Chiaki Text 5

Chiaki does not attend the end-of-year party with her seminar peers. Her actions up until Haruki calls her partway through the party become clear. As she waits on Haruki’s unusually late arrival for their planned meet-up, she happens to run into Setsuna, and the two of them have an end-of-year party of their own. After chatting with Setsuna in a café until night falls, she has come to understand her charm, and a fragment of her feelings for Haruki.

Additional Chiaki Text 6

After her two-person end-of-year party with Setsuna ends, Chiaki leaves her and waits for Haruki to show up. Now understanding Setsuna’s appeal, Chiaki fires herself up again to play the part of a woman that is at least her equal.

Additional Koharu Text

As the male students at the seminar end-of-year party are harassing Haruki over Chiaki not showing up, Haruki learns that it’s been assumed that he was dating Chiaki. At that moment, he remembers something Koharu said to him before.

Additional Mari Text

After their work is over, Haruki and Mari leave Kaiou together. On their way home, Mari buys a copy of the issue of Ensemble in which Haruki’s Kazusa Touma Special Feature appears, saying it’s in honor of her employee’s first big accomplishment. After hearing what she has to say, Haruki gets the notion of buying it himself as well. However, after the two have parted ways, on the train, Mari’s feelings regarding Haruki’s actions are laid bare.

Dialogue:

Additional Chiaki Text 1

Chiaki

“Oh, you’re sounding even more Japanese now. Nice.”

Chiaki

“No, listen! How far apart you are has nothing to do with how much you pay back!”

Additional Chiaki Text 2

Uehara

“It’s a recording. I took it last week. Since our princess skipped out, I had to step in on short notice.”

Additional Chiaki Text 3

Io

“Wait.”

Additional Chiaki Text 4

Chiaki

“Hey, Mom? What were you calling about last night?”

Additional Koharu Text

Koharu

“You don’t have any idea? When people at your university, your other jobs, started acting like it was official?”

Additional Chiaki Text 5

Chiaki

“R-Right, I knew that… Um, so…”

Chiaki

“Y’know, Setsuna, there’s always more to discover with you. It’s so interesting spending time with you.”

Additional Chiaki Text 6

Chiaki

“So I have to play a girl who’s even better than that? Your hurdles are pretty high, ‘Haruki-kun.’”

Additional Mari Text

Mari

“He made me look like an idiot…!”

Text:                                    Coda: Ending, as of a musical piece or movement

Coda: Conclusion

Coda: Final Chapter

Footer:                                Once Setsuna’s Route in Closing Chapter has been cleared, Coda will begin. Two years have passed, and Haruki, a fully-fledged working man, heads to Strasbourg for a business trip. There, after five years apart, he reunites with Kazusa…

Page 038_034

Header:                               Story Summary

Text:                                    Following his graduation from college, Haruki has become a full-time employee at Kaiou. He and Setsuna have carried on a favorable relationship since the Valentine’s Day Concert at Houjou two years ago, and both his work life and his private life have been fulfilling. However, just as he’s thinking it might be time to get married to Setsuna, he happens to run into Kazusa while on a business trip in Strasbourg. And with Kazusa having a performance in Japan scheduled for after he returns, it falls to him to handle her close coverage. With this state of things, the feelings for Kazusa that Haruki has tried so hard to forget about over the past five years are reawakened.

Left dialogue:                    Kazusa

“I was checked out of my hotel, thrown out into the freezing winter air with my one suitcase…”

Left caption:                      At Youko’s direction, Kazusa starts living in the apartment next to Haruki’s until her concert in Japan is over. Haruki hides this fact from Setsuna.

Right dialogue:                 Kazusa

“Yep. Turns out I was your first for everything. Awful, right? …That’s what you get.”

Right caption:                   Haruki carries out his close coverage of Kazusa. As they revisit Music Room #2 at Houjou High School, Kazusa tells him about what really happened that day.

Header:                               Characters

Left 3:

Haruki Kitahara

A newbie editor at the Kaiou Graph. Ever since Mari transferred to New York, his working style has led people to view him as “Kazaoka II.” The special feature on Kazusa that he was in charge of two years ago was received favorably on all fronts, leading him to be entrusted with interviewing Kazusa while abroad, as well as doing close coverage on her when she comes to Japan; his work related to Kazusa has been given top priority. He had been thinking of proposing to Setsuna while overseas, but meeting up with Kazusa again causes him to postpone it.

Heroine

Setsuna Ogiso

Haruki’s girlfriend, who works in PR for Knights Record, a medium-sized music company. Her famed beauty is unchanged since her university days, and she works busily as a liaison with client companies. Also, at Tomo’s request, she sometimes works as a singer for live shows. At present, her relationship with Haruki is one of open, comfortable mutual love, and her friends and family both recognize it as such. However, in her stubbornness in keeping up the “one-week rule” she established with Haruki two years ago, it seems that, in the base of her heart, some little kernel of uncertainty has not been entirely wiped out.

Heroine

Kazusa Touma

An active pianist based in Vienna. While her experience is scant, her placing in an international piano competition has made her widely known, including in Japan. Unable to forget her feelings for Haruki, she has kept them hidden away in her heart for the past five years, playing the piano on her own. At first, she was less than enthusiastic about the Japanese concert that her mother and producer, Youko, proposed, but she returns to Japan in order to respond to Haruki’s words after they reunite. As she carries on her pseudo-cohabitation with Haruki in the name of “close coverage,” those feelings come to be more than she can suppress…

Right 9:

Takeya Iizuka

Haruki’s best friend, who works for a cosmetics company. He manages a store in Tokyo, and is rated highly. Since he graduated college, he has ended his various relationships with women, and seems to be showing a greater faithfulness to Io.

Io Mizusawa

Setsuna’s best friend, who works for a sports supply manufacturer. Her wish was to work in design, but she has been assigned to the personnel department. She stifles her unhappiness with her situation while she works, and lately has been venting to her friends a good deal.

Tomo Yanagihara

A senior at Houjou University. Now in the final stage of her job search, she has received an unofficial offer from Toa TV. Her strange friendship with Setsuna has continued, and she has been making efforts to polish up and promote Setsuna’s talents as a singer.

Youko Touma

An international pianist, Kazusa’s mother, and the director of Youko Touma Offices. Is working to make her daughter’s performance in Japan a reality.

Miyoko Kudou

The sole employee of the Japanese branch of Youko Touma Offices. Her excellence allows her, in some way or another, to put the director’s many whims into action.

Takayanagi

Director of the Houjou University Medical Department, and an internationally renowned authority on leukemia. Has known Youko for a long time, and is someone she relies upon.

Takahiro Ogiso

Setsuna’s younger brother, attending Houjou University. Shows an understanding of Setsuna and Haruki’s relations, and when opinions differ between her and their parents, he generally sides with his sister.

Setsuna’s Mother

When opposition arises between the emotional Setsuna and her rational husband in Ogiso family discussions, Setsuna’s mother often offers a more neutral view.

Setsuna’s Father

Places a great importance on common sense. His remarks are often correct, but the other three members of his family occasionally talk him down with their more emotional arguments.

Header:                               Chapter Structure

Text:                                    As shown below, based on conditions fulfilled in the course of the Common Route, the story of Coda branches off into one of three routes—Setsuna, Kazusa, and Cheating (or else to “25. Normal Ending 3”). Also, starting from the second time you play, following “02. What Changed, What Should Never Change,” additional text pertaining to Kazusa or Setsuna will be inserted, most of which are shown in Scene Replay Mode as separate episodes. Furthermore, there is one episode, “04. Ashen Choice 2,” that can only be viewed starting on the second play-through of the Cheating Route specifically.

Left dialogue:                    Kazusa

“Ah, ah… Ahhh!”

Left caption:                      Starting the second time you play, you will see new content, including actions Kazusa took that Haruki didn’t know about, and a conversation between Kazusa and Youko.

Right dialogue:                 1. Let go

  1. Turn your face away

Not wanting to hurt anyone, hurting everyone equally, awful, pragmatic, so appealing…

Right caption:                   Based on the two Choices at “18. A Choice That Should Never Have Been,” plus the status of flags at that point, you will reach one of four endings.

Header:                               Episode Chart

Key 1:                                  Blue-grey: Common Route episodes

Key box 1:                          Medium grey, dark grey: Round 2+ Additional Episodes

Episodes that can be viewed starting the second time you play the chapter. As with the Additional Chiaki Episodes in Closing Chapter, new text is inserted, and they are shown as differently numbered episodes in Scene Replay Mode. Much of their content pertains to Kazusa’s actions.

Key box 2:                          Pink, blue, light grey: Heroine Route episodes & Cheating Route episodes

Episodes appearing in Setsuna and Kazusa’s Heroine Routes and in the Cheating Route. They can be seen by branching off into the corresponding Route. If you take the Cheating Route a second time, then following “02. Unwritten Rules,” you will briefly branch off to an episode that differs from your first time playing (with new text added).

Top white box:                 Branches off after you’ve cleared Coda

White box 2:                     Depending on your choice, the next episode may be skipped as the story moves forward.

White box 3:                     Picking a certain option will cause the story to branch to the Cheating Route. If you don’t choose it, and haven’t fulfilled the conditions to branch to Setsuna’s Route or Kazusa’s Route, you will move to “25. Normal Ending 3.”

White box 4:                     Depending on your choice, the next episode may be skipped as the story moves forward.

Bottom white box:          Branch depends on whether you have fulfilled conditions (see page 039).

Header:                               Route Guide

Text:                                    In Coda, in addition to two types of flags, there are Affection Ratings for Setsuna and Kazusa, plus a “Cheating Rating,” all of which are related to the branching of Routes. However, the Cheating Rating and Setsuna’s Affection only impact the options available at Choice 12. As with the previous chapter, the following pages show a strategy chart for the Common Route, so you can check everything from Choice outcomes to branch check timing as you go. In particular, if you set the Normal Route Flag to ON, you will then only be able to progress to either “25. Normal Ending 3” or the Cheating Route, so you’ll need to be especially careful there.

Left dialogue:                    1. I will never see Kazusa again

  1. I’ve seen Kazusa

I…

Left caption:                      If you choose “1. I will never see Kazusa again” at Choice 2, thereby failing to show honesty, you will be unable to progress to Setsuna or Kazusa’s Route.

Right dialogue:                 1. I just wanted to see you

  1. Tell the truth about Kazusa

Which one do I choose, and which do I cut off…?

Right caption:                   If one of the two options at Choice 12 is unselectable, that means you already have no chance of taking Kazusa’s Route.

Header:                               Common Route Chart

Box 1:                                  Flag settings at the start of Coda

The two flags in Coda are shown at the right, and both are OFF at the beginning. In order to progress to Setsuna’s Route, Setsuna’s Route Flag must be ON at Choice 12.

Initial flag settings

Normal Route: OFF

Setsuna’s Route: OFF

Box 2:                                  Changes for Round 2+

Starting with your second time playing, Round 2 Additional Text will be inserted in various places, and most of them will be shown in Scene Replay Mode as differently numbered episodes. All focus on depicting things like Youko’s intentions and Kazusa’s emotions, and many truths from the other side of the story are revealed, such as why Kazusa was barefoot when Haruki met her in Strasbourg, and how the Japanese performance that was denied in the interview was hastily decided.

Dialogue:                            Kazusa

“…Well, I never thought I’d hear that from you. ‘We’re taking the night train for Christmas Mass.’ Where’d that come from?”

Caption:                              Kazusa’s reason for coming to Strasbourg was to accompany Youko on her vacation.

Key:                                     Chart Key

-Name of episode as shown in Scene Replay Mode. Dates are also shown at the start of each episode.

-Flags that influence branches to the given Route.

-Shows that a flag is set to ON.

-In addition to Setsuna and Kazusa’s Affection Ratings, Coda also has a Cheating Rating. They influence whether certain options are available for certain Choices. Initial value of each is 0.

-Timing for Choices. Also includes the content of each Choice and their immediate effects.

-Timing for Flag Checks.

-Additional texts that come from meeting designated conditions. Refer to page 040 for their content. The condition for Round 2 Additional Text is playing Coda again after viewing one of its Endings, and most of the episodes containing said texts are shown in Scene Replay Mode as separate episodes.

-Timing for corresponding Event CGs. Refer to page 046 for an overview of their numbering.

Round 2 Additional Text 2

Page 041_037

Top box:                             Early stage Route determination point

If you set the Normal Route Flag to ON at this point, Choices 11 and 12 will disappear. As a result, you will be unable to set the Setsuna’s Route Flag to ON, or to raise Kazusa’s Affection at Choice 11 and 12. Your potential branches will be reduced to “25. Normal Ending 3” or the Cheating Route early on this way.

Middle box:                       Choice 5 effects

If you chose “1. I want to hear Setsuna’s voice” for Choice 5, a scene will be inserted in which Setsuna comes to the front of Haruki’s home before turning back.

Bottom box:                      Scene inserted depending on flags

If you set the Normal Route Flag to ON at Choice 2, you will see a scene in which Setsuna contacts Haruki after finding out that Kazusa’s interview has been printed in the Kaiou Graph.

Box:                                     Setsuna’s Route and Kazusa’s Route: a Choice based on the truth

Choice 12 appears when Haruki meets Setsuna at the hotel in Osaka. This is an extremely important Choice, which just about determines which Heroine Route you will branch off to. However, in order for “1. I just wanted to see you” to be selectable, Setsuna’s current Affection Rating must be lower than the current sum of Kazusa’s Affection Rating and the Cheating rating. If you select this, the branches following can go one of three ways: “25. Normal Ending 3,” Cheating Route, or Kazusa’s Route (but in order to take Kazusa’s route, you must have chosen every available option to this point to raise Kazusa’s Affection). On the other hand, if you select “2. Tell the truth about Kazusa,” you are guaranteed to take Setsuna’s Route. This is the only point at which Setsuna’s Affection and the Cheating rating impact Route branching.

Dialogue:                            Setsuna

“Tonight… you’re going to stay with me.”

Caption:                              If you pick “1. I just wanted to see you,” Setsuna will spend the night with Haruki, even while aware of the strength of his feelings for Kazusa.

Top box:                             Content at beginning changes according to flags

If Setsuna’s Route Flag is set to ON at Choice 12, certain changes will be made at the outset of the episode, including a portion of the dialogue.

Left box:                             Cheating Route Choice & Additional Text

In the episode “05. Congratulations” in the Cheating Route, you will see a choice with the options “1. Remove her glasses” and “2. Kiss her as she is.” The Event CG that follows will vary according to your selection, so if you want to view the complete list of CGs, you may want to save beforehand.

Also, starting the second time you play the Cheating Route, the episode following “02. Unwritten Rules” will change to “04. Ashen Choice 2,” and after the scene in which Tomo joins the usual quartet to go out drinking, a scene with a conversation between Setsuna and Tomo in the taxi home will be added.

Dialogue:                            Tomo

“It would have been the perfect chance to find out who’s living in the apartment next to Kitahara.”

Caption:                              Tomo takes Setsuna to task for letting an opportunity to expose Haruki’s secret slip away.

Middle right box:             Final branching point for Heroine Routes

The branching off to Setsuna and Kazusa’s Routes takes place after “24. The Final Branching Point,” but it is actually settled by the result of this Choice. If Setsuna’s Route Flag is set to ON at Choice 12, then Kazusa’s Affection Rating will not be at its maximum value of 6, so you will be unable to choose “2. I can’t lie to Kazusa,” and will move to Setsuna’s Route. If the flag is OFF, you’ll be able to pick either of the two options, but if you chose “1. I love Setsuna,” the Flag Check immediately thereafter will send you to “25. Normal Ending 3.” Only if you have selected every available option to raise Kazusa’s Affection, and if you choose “2. I can’t lie to Kazusa,” will you move to Kazusa’s Route.

Bottom right box:            Story changes in subsequent episodes based on Route branch

At the stage at which you view these episodes, your branching off to either Setsuna or Kazusa’s Route will already be determined, and certain story developments will change as a result. For example, if you’re headed for Setsuna’s Route, then while Haruki is spending his time in Kazusa’s company, there will be scenes in which he texts Setsuna with status updates.

Dialogue:                            “I’ve got something positive to report today. Kazusa has started practicing again.”

Caption:                              We see Haruki persisting in his sincerity to Setsuna, even though he knows he won’t receive any replies.

Chart caption:                   Within the 14 Choices, which options lead to which of the 4 possible Endings? Just check this table. By choosing the number shown for each Choice, you can reach the corresponding Ending (for blank entries, it makes no difference which you pick). For Normal 3 and Cheating, if you pick “1. I will never see Kazusa again” at Choice 2, then you will be able to reach one or the other through Choices 13 and 14. Also, reaching Setsuna is unexpectedly simple—after choosing “2. I’ve seen Kazusa” at Choice 2, then all you have to do is choose the options available at Choices 12, 13, and 14. Setsuna’s Affection Rating and the Cheating Rating only impact the options for Choice 2, so you can reach those endings without raising them. Kazusa is the most difficult, and you won’t be able to reach it without following the table exactly.

Header:                               Additional Text

Text Explanations:

Round 2 Additional Text 1

In addition to seeing a conversation between Kazusa and Youko regarding the interview while on the train to Strasbourg, we see a scene of Kazusa spotting Haruki at the station and chasing after him, and the reason for her being barefoot when they run into each other becomes clear. Also, a scene is added of Kazusa talking to Youko on the phone back at the hotel.

Round 2 Additional Text 2

In the train on the way back to Vienna, Kazusa makes up her mind to do the Japanese concert that Youko has planned. Officially, she says it’s for the continuation of Youko Touma Offices, but really she wants Haruki to hear her play.

Round 2 Additional Text 3

Haruki and Kazusa run into each other in front of Kazusa’s former home. They part after an argument, but afterward, Kazusa mentally apologizes, just as Haruki does.

Round 2 Additional Texts 4 & 5

The day after Kazusa stays the night at Haruki’s apartment, Youko sees her daughter, who hasn’t been able to sleep recently, sleeping peacefully. A scene is added in which she suggests Kazusa stay elsewhere. Afterward, we see Kazusa unable to sleep at the hotel.

Round 2 Additional Texts 6 & 7

Haruki asks Kazusa to let him take pictures of her playing the piano. We see a scene in which Kazusa explains her real reason for refusing, as well as a scene in which Kazusa, out on a morning walk with Haruki and feeling happy to be with him, murmurs something to Youko that could be taken either as bitterness or as gratitude.

Round 2 Additional Texts 8 & 9

Tomo spots a woman at Setsuna’s live venue that she’d seen in front of Haruki’s apartment. At first she hadn’t realized it, but while talking to the bartender afterward, she starts to wonder whether it might have been Kazusa. Then, after the show ends, she keeps Setsuna from going to Haruki’s apartment.

Round 2 Additional Text 10

Setsuna hears from Tomo that she saw someone who might have been Kazusa. As she writes out her feelings in messages she will never send to Haruki, their content makes her aware of the darkness in her own heart.

Round 2 Additional Text 11

After finishing his interview with Kazusa, Haruki falls asleep in her apartment. Kazusa, watching him sleep, speaks about how she really feels.

Round 2 Additional Text 12

Haruki pursues Setsuna all the way to the location of her business trip, and she spends the night in the hotel with him. She accepts him even while being aware of his lies, but after he falls asleep, words of anguish escape her.

Additional Kazusa Text

After spending the night with Setsuna, Haruki decides to take the bullet train back to Tokyo the next day. While listening to the recording of his interview with Kazusa, he notices that Kazusa has recorded a message of her own to him.

Dialogue:

Round 2 Additional Text 1

Round 2 Additional Text 2

Kazusa

“…I’ll do it.”

Round 2 Additional Text 3

Round 2 Additional Texts 6 & 7

Round 2 Additional Texts 8 & 9

Round 2 Additional Text 10

Round 2 Additional Text 11

She lifted her face to find a uniformed male student, looking sharply at her with wide eyes.

…At least, his expression was stiff enough for her to be able to interpret it that way.

“…”

The fact that her present world was two years after that dream, the fact that she was currently in a third-year general course classroom, the fact that it was sixth period… no, based on the noise around her, the school day had probably ended already—all of these facts streamed into her head, bringing her back to reality.

“…Hmm…”

However, as the aforementioned male student was simply standing there, frozen, Kazusa took advantage of the moment and lay her head back down on the desk…

“Ahh?! Sorry, sorry! You’re Kazusa Touma, right?”

“…Hn.”

Only to be roused again, which made her mood even worse.

Text:                                    Everyone knows the draw of the story of White Album 2, but the visual side of things, from the many Event CGs to the subtle details of the characters’ expressions in their Motion Portraits, is also a massive part of what makes the game so appealing. This section is a compilation of those visual elements.

Lyrics: Naoko Sutani       Arrangement: Michio Igasa

It feels like we slip further apart every day

But our feelings are always there beside us

We claim we’ll be fine if we can’t see each other

But we know we’re just bluffing, mixed with a sigh

The treasure we left with the passing seasons

Is a puzzle missing its most important pieces

Just as the white snow blankets the streets

We can fill up the blanks in this album

Though the loneliness threatens to crush me beneath it

And I spend day after anxious day alone

You pat me on the shoulder, say it’ll be all right

Giving me courage with your smile

Even if we separate, I’ll have your words

Strange as it seems, that’s enough to make me happy

The fleeting snow carries my secret feelings

Dyeing the album’s pure white pages

The treasure we left with the passing seasons

Is a puzzle missing its most important pieces

Just as the white snow blankets the streets

We can fill up the blanks in this album

Right column:                    Sound of Destiny

Vocals: —                          Composition: Kazuhide Nakagami

Lyrics: Naoko Sutani       Arrangement: Kazuhide Nakagami

Captured by this shapeless thing called love

I know there is such a thing as love that stops your heart

The longing you gave me every time we met

I still believe in it—it will never fade

Unending passion that never rests

Where does it come from? Is there somewhere it sleeps?

La la, the stars depict my destiny, countless shining lights

I know one thing for sure—I will never leave you

I close my eyes and hear my heartbeat, the proof that I’m alive

Following the rhythm my heart beats out

I’ll dance as I go, and I’ll go anywhere

Even when I’m tired of hurting and being hurt

I still fall in love, a love that makes it hard to breathe

Even if a world of darkness is all that waits at the end of my path

I’ll be able to keep a light in my eyes, I know

La la, the stars turn the wheel of a single flowing destiny

Dwelling in the hearts of people, strong and weak, hot and cold

Touch your chest and feel your heartbeat, the proof that you’re alive

Following the melody sung by the stars

I’ll sing as I go, and I’ll go forever

Left column:                      Twinkle Snow

Vocals: Akari Tsuda        Composition: Junya Matsuoka

Lyrics: Naoko Sutani       Arrangement: Michio Igasa

We talked and talked until it got dark

Beneath a winter sky that threatened snow any moment

When did it start? What is the true meaning

Of my wish to stay with you every time we part?

Softly

Snow falls and blankets the feelings of love that I found tonight

Maybe I’ll find another precious feeling tomorrow

I want to show you a more brightly shining self than I did today

I looked up at the flickering sky and the snow gently kissed me

If someday you find a girl

Will you keep talking to me like this?

You’ll have to put her first eventually

What is the meaning of the way my heart rebels

At the thought of you leaving me?

Softly

Snow falls and blankets the feelings of love that I found tonight

Maybe I’ll find another feeling to make me cry tomorrow

I want to show you a more brightly shining self than I did today

I’ll look up at the flickering sky and gently kiss the snow

Finding new feelings is what makes us grow up

The snow covers and protects everything until the budding season

Shining

Snow falls and blankets the many feelings I found this year

When spring comes, a new me will begin to sprout

So that I can show you a more brightly shining self than I did this year

As I look up at the flickering sky

I’ll wish on the snow, pray to the snow, gently kiss the snow

Right column:                    After All: Feelings Spelled Out

Vocals: Rena Uehara     Composition: Shinya Ishikawa

Lyrics: Mimi                      Arrangement: Michio Igasa

A flock of birds takes off from the earth

Where is my solitary heart supposed to go?

I still have the kisses we softly exchanged that day

And our heartbeats as we held each other tight

The summer I spent with you, my darling, has ended

The memories I brought with me return to the sky

You were so dazzling, so kind, and I loved you

I’m still looking for that voice, that dream

Stay just a little longer, just like this

Only the lights adorning the streets on the weekend

Envelop my blurry heart

Lovers swaying in silhouette

Longing overtakes me before I’m aware of it

I think of the autumn I spent with you, where I can never return

Of the footsteps long gone, of your hands, of tomorrow

Being happy by your side was everything

The confusion and loneliness still cast their shadow

But, close—I’ll forget it all, just like this.

Though I call your dear name, the wind just sweeps it away

Taking me far, far from the past, from that day

Some day, some day, surely, if I wait for the winter

You’ll follow your memories back to me

More than anyone, more than ever

I’ll sing of you, even if the words never reach you

Feel and believe in a new time
