Narration: I have to write…
Narration: After Setsuna ran off, I chased her down and took her home, where we were both lectured by her father until morning.
Narration: By the time that was over, the breakfast her mother made sat steaming in front of us.
Narration: This family, strict and yet warm…
Narration: Some things haven’t changed at all in the past three years.
Narration: Yes, just like back then…
Chapter title: SESSION12
Simple and Complicated
Narration: Today is the due date for the draft of the “Kazusa Touma” special feature that Mari-san made me rewrite.
Narration: I have to write about three years ago.
I have to write about the way we were in the week leading up to the school festival.
About the most ecstatically happy days of my life…
Staff: Mari-san! There’s a package!
Mari: For me?
Staff: It’s care of the editorial department, but it was cosigned by Houjou High School.
Mari: A DVD…
Takeya: You two are the fifth group to show up since the last Kaiou Graph came out.
Takahiro: I keep telling Sugiura that Kazusa Touma and my sister were best friends, but she doesn’t believe me.
Koharu: …Sure, we’ll leave it at that.
Takeya: Your older sister is a legend in her own right.
Takahiro: …Well, I don’t know much about that…
Takeya: Well, she was Miss Houjou High three years in a row, right? Come to think of it, she hasn’t participated in the real Miss Houjou contest at all.
Takahiro: Yeah, she’s got a boyfriend now.
Takahiro: They showed up together at like three in the morning the day before yesterday, and Dad got pretty mad.
Mari & Koharu: Huh…?
Mari: Why didn’t he say anything?
Mari: …Well, I guess this is something he’d choose to hide.
Mari: But why would he?
Mari: There’s nothing wrong with this.
Mari: …Most people would say it’s pretty cool, actually.
Koharu: As I know him, he’s always gloomy…
Koharu: He never laughs or shows off, or gets caught up in himself like this.
Narration: He’s a cold-blooded creature, who always looks at himself from a distance as though he were somebody else, and is terrified of letting anybody’s heart get near him…
Takahiro: Hey, Sugiura, you know the guy on the right playing guitar, right?
Koharu: The one on that screen…
Koharu: is the one I saw in the music room that day…
FX: Chak chak
Narration: And… it’s done.
Narration: How the musical genius who never opened her heart to anyone dropped out of school…
The anger, the melancholy, the honesty, the lack of honesty…
Recalling those few days from three years ago…
I dashed off this article, through laughter and tears.
Narration: Once I send this in, I will have sold her.
Narration: But, at this point, it’s too much of a hassle to think about getting guilt or satisfaction out of that.
Narration: I imagine I’ll be able to sleep decently tonight, for the first time in ages.
Narration: Setsuna, and Kazusa…
All of our frustrations over the past three years…
Just for this moment, I’ve managed to roll it all up and convert it into happy memories.
Haruki: Good night…
Narration: I really had no way of knowing…
to whom those words were directed.
Mari: Kitahara, may I have a moment?
Mari: …I’m sorry.
Mari: I… received this from Houjou High yesterday.
Mari: I had no idea how much this article would hurt you…
Mari: It’s my fault, for not showing greater consideration, and I apologize.
Haruki: …You haven’t done anything wrong, Mari-san.
Mari: The fact that you drive yourself so unreasonably hard now…
Does Kazusa Touma have something to do with that?
Haruki: That’s long over by now.
Mari: It may be “over” as something that happened, but that doesn’t mean it’s over on an emotional level, right?
Mari: You shouldn’t flee to your work just because you suffered in love.
Mari: The work will suffer in turn if you do that.
Mari: Say something.
Mari: No, don’t say anything! Now I’m embarrassed!
Mari: Anyway, I’m heading back to work.
Mari: Wounds from love can only be healed by love itself.
Don’t depend on work for everything!
Mari: That will be all!
Narration: Mari-san… She’s a good person.
Haruki: …Got it.
Narration: Yep, still exhausted…
Chiaki: Something’s different, Haruki.
Chiaki: You don’t reject girls other than me any more.
Haruki: I… Hang on, where would you have observed something like that?
Chiaki: When I was walking past Goodies the other day, I saw you.
Chiaki: Ugh, how boring!
Chiaki: I wonder if this is how parents feel when their children move away from them?
Chiaki: This could kick up some drama…
Haruki: Did you say something?
Chiaki: I’m hungry! Get me food!
Haruki: Why are you here, exactly…?
Haruki: Fine, I’ll heat up some curry. Do your report.
Chiaki: Wow! You’re always prepared, Haruki!
FX: Clink clink
FX: Rrrring rrrring
Chiaki: Yeah, yeah…
FX: Rrrrring rrring
Chiaki: Yes, hello? You’ve reached Haruki Kitahara’s cell…
Haruki: Gaaah! Stop, stop!
Chiaki: Just kidding.
Haruki: All you’ve been doing lately is causing fatal misunderstandings…
Takeya: Hey, Haruki! Io and I are at the corner store right by you right now…
Haruki: Huh? Oh, no, today I’m kind of…
Haruki: Listen, I have to submit this report by the start of winter break.
Haruki: Food? I’ve already eaten.
Chiaki: Here’s that hometown influence…
Haruki: Yes, I’m sleeping enough.
Takeya: Well, see you later!
FX: Thump thump
Haruki: I told him “no”…
Chiaki: Maybe you don’t need to say “no” right now.
Chiaki: I’ll see you next week. Some time before winter break starts.
Haruki: If you say so.
Chiaki: …A lot of interesting stuff happens around you, Haruki.
Chiaki: You always look after everyone so well. I thought that if all you ever did was give, you would end up losing.
Chiaki: But that’s not true at all. There are lots of people trying to give back to you.
Chiaki: Your relationships are so simple and complicated. It’s a lot to learn from.
Chiaki: I was just saying…
Chiaki: I really like you, Haruki.
Haruki: That joke again…
Chiaki: I mean it.
The fact that you’re so helpful…
Chiaki: To tell you the truth, I’m kind of desperate for attention.
Chiaki: So, I’m drawn to people I can depend on.
When I really fall for someone, I get even more selfish.
Chiaki: I like people who put everything they have into indulging my selfishness.
Narration: I don’t feel like I’m talking to Izumi right now.
Narration: Chiaki Izumi isn’t this kind of woman…
I love you.
Narration: This… This is…
not the Izumi I know, and yet, I know…
Chiaki: Juuust kidding!
Haruki: Get out already! And be careful on your way home!
Io: What? Were you thinking about trying to pick her up?
Takeya: No… I just feel like I’ve seen her somewhere…?
Io: If she’s a student who lives around here, she’s probably from our college. Seems obvious.
Takeya: I mean, from before that…
Takeya: Well, whatever.
Io: Look at him… Out cold before we even got to the main discussion…
Io: Well, you’re looking better than I expected, so that’s good.
Io: But, about Setsuna…!
Setsuna’s been… depressed.
Io: I saw her yesterday.
Io: She kept saying, “It’s my fault.”
Io: Absolutely everything. “My fault.”
Three days ago…
Three years ago…
Io: I mean, I guess it’s the same for you, Haruki…
Io: Any other time, you’d blame somebody else without batting an eye…
Io: But, in this particular case, you aren’t even trying to acknowledge Setsuna’s own errors.
Haruki: …It’s my policy to be fair, that’s all.
Haruki: That I’m the one in the wrong is self-evident.
Io: W-well, yeah, you are the one in the wrong…
Narration: I was thankful to her for taking me to task.
Narration: For the past few days, I’ve been encouraged, teased, told off…
I haven’t had the mental space to devote to worrying about all these different interventions.
But I know that Setsuna must be rejecting human contact even more adamantly than I am right now…
Haruki: Hey, Io…
Keep looking after Setsuna, all right?
Io: We will, for now.
Io: But you’d better take her back soon.
You know we’re just proxies for you.
Haruki: …You know, you two are pretty nosy yourselves.
Haruki: There’s nothing you can say about me.
Io: You were the one who came to us!
You wanted accomplices.
Caption: Dead drunk
Narration: It’s three in the morning now.
A unique hour for us…
that, mere days ago, became something special…
and, mere days ago, fell off its pedestal.
Narration: So, I’m going to use this as my beginning point.
…If I don’t make this start, there’s no way I’ll be able to muster this kind of nerve again.
Message: I have Takeya and Io here right now.
Message: They made a mess of dinner and a big racket, and now they’re completely zonked out.
We haven’t gotten this drunk in ages. I hope we’ll be able to get up in the morning…
Anyway, that’s all for today. I’m going to bed. I’ll send you another message tomorrow.
Narration: If these two saw this message…
They’d probably say something like, “What kind of cop-out is that?” “Don’t you have anything else to tell her?” “What are you, a middle schooler?”
Narration: But this is enough for today.
Narration: If I come up with something else I want to talk about…
I can just message her tomorrow…
Haruki: Oww, my neck…
