White Album 2 manga
Volume 1, chapter 5
Kazusa: All right…
I’ve got a lesson, so I’ll head off for now.
Chapter title: SESSION05
Two and One
Narration: After the festival, Touma decided to enter a competition for the first time in two years…
and she’s been working diligently at the piano every day.
Setsuna: Okay! See you later, Kazusa!
Haruki: See you tomorrow.
Setsuna: I’m looking forward to the competition!
Setsuna: I’ve never been to something like that before.
Haruki: Me, neither.
Narration: And, as for the two of us…
Narration: We’re boyfriend and girlfriend now.
Setsuna: It feels a little lonely, though.
Setsuna: I won’t be able…
to spend as much time with Kazusa.
Setsuna: Ah! Not that I get bored being with you, or anything, Haruki-kun!
Haruki: I know.
Narration: Because I feel the same way.
Setsuna: It’s the same for you, right, Haruki-kun?
Narration: The day after the school festival—the day after I decided to date Setsuna…
I went to Touma’s place to give her the news.
Haruki: I, um… I asked Setsuna out.
Haruki: But, can you and me and Setsuna… still be together, as a trio?
Narration: And, when I told her what Setsuna and I were hoping for…
Kazusa: I have no reason to leave.
Narration: Touma answered in her usual blunt way.
Narration: Since then, we’ve hung out and studied together, the three of us, just like always. Nothing has changed since the festival.
Narration: Well, maybe just one thing…
Narration: I catch Touma looking away from me a lot now.
Narration: Her face looks even more beautiful in profile…
Narration: It makes me remember the feelings that I should have abandoned by now, whether I like it or not.
Narration: The fact that I have always been drawn to Touma, from the moment I first saw her.
Narration: To be honest with everyone…
That’s my policy. And yet…
Haruki: We should keep some distance from Touma for a little while.
Setsuna: Why would you say that?!
Haruki: Until the competition is over, I want to be as little of a disruption as possible.
Haruki: She’s finally getting back to the piano seriously.
So, when the competition is over, the three of us can hang out again.
Haruki: All right, Setsuna?
Setsuna: All right…
Haruki: Come to think of it, your birthday is next month, right?
Setsuna: Yep! It’s on February 14th.
Setsuna: Then, why don’t we all gather at my place on the 14th?
I’ll make plenty of food!
Narration: For now, I’m going to try to avoid seeing Touma as much as possible.
Haruki: You could let me host for once. You’re the guest of honor.
Narration: Until I can really consider Touma a close friend.
In the meantime, you’ll comfort me, won’t you, Haruki-kun?
Haruki: I promise…
Haruki: I will never leave you alone, Setsuna.
Narration: If Setsuna and I can cross every line…
If we can connect in body and in heart…
Setsuna: Sniffle… Hic…
Kazusa: …Do something, will you?
She’s your girlfriend.
Haruki: She’s crying over you, Touma.
You do something.
Setsuna: I-I’m sorry.
I’ll stop soon…
Kazusa: You two dream too much, anyway.
Kazusa: You thought I was gonna take first place? Was that some kind of joke?
Kazusa: It doesn’t bother me.
Kazusa: In fact, I’m glad I lost the competition.
Kazusa: What do you mean, “why”?
Kazusa: C’mon! I’m hopeless!
FX: Ruffle ruffle
Haruki: It is bothering you, isn’t it?
Kazusa: No, the fact that I lost the competition isn’t what’s hopeless.
I guess… I’m hopeless for being so relieved.
Haruki: I don’t know what you mean.
Kazusa: I never know when to give up…
Kazusa: I’m always looking backward…
I have this gloomy personality that keeps me from moving ahead in any serious way…
Kazusa: …I guess that was a rejection.
Haruki: I still have no idea what you mean.
Kazusa: Well, whatever. All I have to do is try again.
Kazusa: So, I’m not depressed.
Setsuna: You’re going to come back to school tomorrow, right?
Kazusa: Maybe so…
I guess I don’t have any legitimate reason to skip now.
Setsuna: Then, the three of us can be together again tomorrow!
Kazusa: If that’s what you want, Setsuna.
Kazusa: …So, that’s how it is.
Keep it up until graduation, Kitahara.
Same to you.
Kazusa: See you around!
Narration: After that, Touma never did come back to school.
Haruki: Touma has…
For her lessons starting in April.
Haruki: I see…
Narration: I tried any number of times to contact her, but she never responded to any of my calls or messages.
Why…? Why only me…?
Setsuna: Are you…
Haruki: A little, I guess.
She’s probably forgotten all about your birthday, Setsuna.
Setsuna: I don’t mind that.
This is an important time for Kazusa.
Haruki: Why don’t we…
celebrate your birthday, just the two of us?
Shopkeeper: Thank you very much!
Narration: I finally did it… I got my present for Setsuna.
Narration: I had her name engraved on the inside, too.
It’s such a cheesy birthday present. Like, “Oh, god, you really did that?”
Narration: But, I know Setsuna will be happy with it, and give me the most amazing smile.
I think we should all have a party!
Narration: Setsuna rejected my request that day.
Setsuna: My family, and Kazusa, and you…
If it’s possible, I’d like to celebrate all together.
Haruki: It’s cold…
Narration: If Setsuna had agreed then…
Narration: While the two of us were alone, I was going to confess everything.
That I lost sight of where my feelings were destined to go…
That Touma caused me to waver, just a bit…
That my attraction to Setsuna grew even stronger in spite of that…
That I’m seeking the true destination for my feelings…
That I… want Setsuna.
Setsuna: I mean, you’re thinking of some kind of fancy restaurant, right, Haruki-kun?
It’s too early for us to do that.
Narration: I had a feeling that, if she were to see through everything, she would be able to give an answer.
Narration: Setsuna values the relationship between the two of us, as well as the relationship between the three of us.
In which case, I have to respond to that.
Narration: What would Touma think?
Akina: Are you sure you’ll be all right on your own?
Setsuna: You’re worrying too much! I’ll have everybody with me. I’ll be fine.
How long are you going to keep sulking?
Akina: You agreed that she needed the space to have her first party with her classmates in three years, right?
Takahiro: Let’s go already!
Akina: All right, all right.
Akina: Then, we’ll see you in two days.
Setsuna: Bye! See you later!
Setsuna: …All right!
Setsuna: Too plain, maybe?
It’s a coincidence, right?
Setsuna: It’s a coincidence that they went on a trip, and left me here…
There just happens not to be anybody in the house.
Setsuna: Hey, Kazusa…
Setsuna: If you don’t come…
Setsuna: there’s no telling…
what will happen with us, you know?
Narration: There are still two hours before the party.
Even if we get into an argument and I have to take her out by force, there’s still more than enough time.
Narration: This is for Setsuna.
Because I don’t want her to be lonely.
It’s done, it’s done!
Maybe it’s a little too big…?
Setsuna: I’m not sure we’ll be able to eat all this…
Setsuna: Well, that’s all right.
Setsuna: We can eat more of it tomorrow.
Setsuna: …The two of us.
Setsuna: Haruki-kun? Where are you?
Haruki: I’m on my way…
I’m gonna be a little late.
Haruki: I’ll be late…
But I will be there.
Narration: The “secretive” behavior that I always loathed so much…
Haruki: You can all start without me.
Setsuna: All right.
Narration: I’ve just done it… to the person who’s most important to me.
Setsuna: “You all”…
Nothing is going to start…
What did you just say…?
Youko: I said that she’s arriving at the airport tonight, so you probably won’t be able to see her today.
Haruki: The airport… You mean Narita…?
Youko: I see…
Youko: So that girl hasn’t told you anything.
Youko: The lessons she’s been taking…
are in Vienna.
Haruki: …Welcome back, Touma.
Kazusa: Why are you here?
Haruki: I went and saw Youko-san.
Haruki: She was way more ordinary…
and a way better person than I expected.
Kazusa: I only just learned that my own mother was that kind of person…
Announcer: The next stop is Onjuku.
Kazusa: Well, bye.
Haruki: Wait. Where are you going?
Kazusa: I’m tired. I’m going home so I can go to bed.
Haruki: Not happening.
Haruki: You are coming with me to Setsuna’s birthday party, right now.
Haruki: And you’re going to tell her, honestly…
that you and your mother are leaving for Europe next month.
Haruki: Convince Setsuna…
that you’re breaking our promise…
Haruki: that the three of us would always be together!
Narration: No. That’s not what I want to say.
Kazusa: …Don’t accuse me like that.
Haruki: I’m not accusing you! I’m just…
Haruki: telling you… not to lie…
Kazusa: All Setsuna needs is you, right?
Haruki: Why do you have to vanish out of my life?!
Kazusa: “Vanish out of your life”…?
Kazusa: You were the one who disappeared first!
Kazusa: You chose to put yourself out of my reach!
And now you’re torturing me by telling me to go back with you!
Kazusa: You’re so awful…
Haruki: Wh-why didn’t you say that from the start?!
How was I supposed to know?!
Narration: God, what the hell… Touma felt the same way the whole time?
Kazusa: How could I tell you?! Setsuna had already told you…
I knew it would only hurt Setsuna…!
Narration: For the sake of being honest with Setsuna…
Narration: Touma and I couldn’t be honest with each other.
Kazusa: Why are you so used to this?!
Narration: If I ran, I might be able to catch up with her.
I could catch Touma again.
But I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t even make my way to where Setsuna was waiting for me.
I just stood there.
