White Album 2 manga
Volume 1, chapter 2
Narration: The band collapsed, and it seemed like my dream had vanished…
Narration: But, when the most beautiful girl in school joined in…
Takeya: Thank you! Thank you! With you, Setsuna-chan, we’ll be unstoppable!
Narration: I was able to grasp a faint bit of hope.
Haruki: Watch it! Don’t grab her like that!
Narration: That beautiful piano is what granted it.
Takeya: Haruki! Be careful, will you?!
Narration: I never thought that its player…
Chapter title: SESSION02
Narration: would be her…
Haruki: Wait… Touma?!
Kazusa: What are you doing? You…
Narration: Oh, shit.
Takeya: Haruki! Are you okay?!
Kazusa: Seriously, what the hell is wrong with him…?
Teacher: Hey! Kitahara! What are you doing?!
Haruki: Excuse us.
Kazusa: …I don’t get it.
Why did I have to get told off?
Haruki: You’re asking this now?! Why didn’t you ask the teacher?!
Kazusa: There’s no point trying to talk to teachers about anything.
Haruki: They probably misunderstand you because you’re always acting like some kind of old-school delinquent!
Haruki: …That said… I’m sorry.
It’s my fault this turned into such a disaster.
Haruki: Still, this is what happens when you live the way you live! If you worked harder to gain the teachers’ trust, like me, Touma…
Kazusa: Yeah, I’m not interested in sucking up and living an ordinary, boring life like you.
Kazusa: You know, I’ve been wanting to say this to you for a long, long time…
FX: Patter patter patter
Setsuna: Are you hurt?! Are your fingers okay?!
Setsuna: I heard about it from Iizuka-kun… You almost fell out of a window, didn’t you?
Setsuna: Hm… It’s hard to tell from looking…
Haruki: Wah…! I’m fine, I’m fine!
Kazusa: Well, anyway…
FX: Click click
Setsuna: Is she a friend of yours?
Haruki: This is Kazusa Touma.
Haruki: She’s our keyboardist.
Kazusa: Get real, you idiot!
Takeya: Well, we might not have much hope there.
Takeya: Kazusa Touma, class 3-E, thirty-second in attendance, member of the go-home club.
Haruki: I know.
Takeya: Her mother is Youko Touma, the world-famous pianist.
Seriously?! The one who showed up in that whiskey commercial with all the really great artists…?
She’s got talent, too. She took first place in a competition as soon as she started here.
With that skill, and… well, on a personality level, when it comes to relationships in the music department, she’s caused some pretty serious friction. She’s what you call an “aloof genius.”
Takeya: So, not exactly going to play along with our messing around.
Narration: Touma, who stayed isolated even when she changed into the general education department.
Haruki: Good morning, Touma.
Kazusa: Back the hell off.
Haruki: You’ve been asleep this whole time. Are you sick?
I’ll take you to the nurse if you want.
Kazusa: Don’t touch me.
Haruki: …? I’m not touching you.
FX: Flare flare
Narration: As much of a busybody as I am, she still refuses to give.
Haruki: So, are you going to the nurse?
Narration: The rumors say she’s aloof and solitary, but at the core, she’s surprisingly childish, and she doesn’t seem all that bad.
Takeya: Yeah, she’s a tricky one.
Narration: She does seem tricky…
Haruki: I’m going to invite her.
Haruki: I’ll make her join us, whatever it takes.
Narration: Once you’ve met that piano…
Once you’ve been taken in by that sound…
there’s no thinking about anything else.
Haruki: So, that’s where we are now.
Setsuna: In other words, the pianist I heard from the roof that day wasn’t a member of the Light Music Club…
she was just somebody next door who happened to play along from time to time…
Setsuna: and, in order to persuade her, you want to tell her my secret.
Setsuna: Have I got that right?
Haruki: I’m begging you! This is the only good way I can think of!
Setsuna: She certainly is an amazing pianist…
Setsuna: But, do you have to go that far for Touma-san? Couldn’t we find somebody else from the music department?
Haruki: Absolutely not! Touma is crucial!
Haruki: If all you’d heard from the roof was my guitar, you wouldn’t have been singing, right, Ogiso?
Setsuna: I…! Well, maybe you’re right…
Setsuna: But that’s not what I want to hear…
Setsuna: I want to hear your personal opinion, Kitahara-kun.
Haruki: She was the first one…
to listen seriously to my guitar-playing.
Setsuna: You mean the way she played along with you, even though you had never seen each other’s faces?
Haruki: …No, it was a bit before that.
During summer vacation.
Haruki: She helped me practice the guitar.
Haruki: Her personality is terrible.
It was seriously Spartan training! Everything she said was harsh.
Haruki: But I never felt like fighting her on it. She was way better at it than I was, after all.
Haruki: And, even though it was only one day, and even though her tongue was so sharp, she still taught me very carefully.
Setsuna: Hey, Kitahara-kun…
When you’re spending time with a girl, do you always talk about other girls?
Haruki: No, I don’t normally talk about this kind of stuff with girls…
Wait, huh?! Was there something wrong with what I said?
Setsuna: No, not really!
Setsuna: I don’t mind… if you tell Touma-san about me.
Setsuna: If it’ll help her look forward.
Setsuna: Go for it, Haruki-kun.
Haruki: I will! Thank you, Ogiso!
Haruki: …So, she wound up singing thirty songs in a row, and the next thing I knew, the date had changed.
Haruki: No, seriously, she’s completely different from how the rumors paint her!
Haruki: I never imagined she was such an interesting girl—great personality, hardworking, so reserved and yet with a playful side.
Haruki: Anyway, I want you to see her singing, just once.
I have no doubt that your perception of her will change.
Haruki: I’m not saying she’s a crazy good singer…
Haruki: I mean, she’s definitely good, but she would say she’s “good at karaoke.” That level.
Haruki: But that’s not the essence of it.
Haruki: What I felt when I first saw her singing on the roof… It’s a bit of a cliché, but she was very “picturesque.”
Haruki: The point is, she’ll make a big splash in our show, whether she succeeds or fails.
Haruki: I mean, we would have that Setsuna Ogiso singing for us!
Haruki: Still, I’d rather we did succeed, and stand out.
I can’t let Ogiso get embarrassed. So, Touma, if you would…
Kazusa: Get the hell oooout!
Setsuna: Good evening!
Setsuna: Touma-san, right?
Setsuna: Um, I’ve joined the Light Music Club.
Kazusa: That so? Congrats.
Setsuna: Even so, it’s a unit that will only perform once, and disband as soon as our performance at the school festival is over.
Setsuna: It’s going to be my first time singing in front of so many people… I’m a little nervous.
Kazusa: Then why don’t you quit?
Setsuna: I couldn’t possibly! Everybody is working so hard, giving it their best!
Kazusa: What do you mean, “their best”? There’s only one person working right now, so you may as well already have broken up.
Setsuna: You seem to know a lot.
Setsuna: But, that’s old news.
Now, there’s one more person working at it.
Setsuna: And, Touma-san…
I would love it if we could increase the people working with us by just one more.
FX: Munch munch
Kazusa: Not happening.
Setsuna: You mean it?
Kazusa: I mean it.
Setsuna: You absolutely refuse?
Kazusa: I absolutely refuse.
Setsuna: Even if I beg you and beg you?
Kazusa: Knock it off!
Setsuna: Even if Kitahara-kun begs you?
Setsuna: He said that if we want this festival show to succeed, your skills are essential.
That, no matter what it takes, he wants you to do it with us.
Setsuna: I’m not lying, you know? Kitahara-kun really, definitely said that!
I don’t want to. I’m not interested.
Setsuna: It doesn’t seem that way…
Setsuna: That was tasty.
Setsuna: Well, it’s almost closing time, so I’ll get going.
Setsuna: Why don’t we talk it over a little more on Sunday?
Setsuna: We’ll gather at Sueji Station at ten o’clock.
Kazusa: Wait just a minute!
Kazusa: I’m not going!
Kazusa: I’m… not…
Takahiro: I’m telling you, it’s definitely a love triangle thing…
Akina: Are they really having a break-up talk?
Takahiro: They’ve gotta be! I think sis must have stolen that girl’s boyfriend…
Setsuna: Ugh! Takahiro! What kind of girl do you think I am?!
Setsuna: And you, Mom?! How could you?!
Setsuna: Sorry about that. Now, where were we?
Kazusa: There’s already a serious problem with your plan.
Kazusa: There are only three weeks left… Even if you add someone else, you still won’t be ready in time for the festival.
Kazusa: And what about the other members? Do you have a bassist? A drummer?
Haruki: G-give me another week…
Kazusa: Yeah, you’re out of time.
Kazusa: Do you think you can succeed just from practicing all together for two weeks?
It’s not like you to come up with a pipedream like that.
Haruki: …that weird…?
Setsuna & Kazusa: Huh?
Haruki: Is it that weird for me to have a dream…?
Haruki: Maybe it’s not like me.
But can’t I just have this one month?
Haruki: I don’t care if you hate me for this…
Haruki: But! Even if you do hate me, I will get you to join us!
Haruki: …If I can.
Kazusa: …Hold on. I don’t remember saying anything about hating you.
FX: Knock knock
Susumu: Setsuna, I need to talk to you.
Susumu: You’re talking about going onstage at the school festival…
Didn’t you promise to talk to me and your mother first when it came to anything like that?
Setsuna: W-wait! I don’t want to talk about this in front of my friends…
Susumu: Because you’ve been lying, right?
You never said a word about singing at the festival.
Setsuna: I’m not lying! I just couldn’t find the right time to talk about it…
Susumu: Is that why you quit your job, too?
When you went out late at night to do karaoke, was that for practice?
Setsuna: That is why I quit my job, but the karaoke really is just a hobby…
Setsuna: I mean, I haven’t rehearsed at all yet.
Susumu: Anyway, I want you to tell us everything, from start to end.
Then we can all decide whether you’re going to participate.
Kazusa: Should we… leave?
Kazusa: …What happened there?
Haruki: How am I supposed to know?
Kazusa: Having your family butt in that much…
Kazusa: and thinking that’s normal…
Kazusa: …I can do without that.
Haruki: Well, it was like that in my house, too, until a few years ago.
Haruki: Around the time I entered middle school, my parents got divorced and kind of stopped having any concern about me, but…
Kazusa: I don’t know my father’s name or face.
And I haven’t been living with my mother for the past several years.
The card she gave me has no spending limit.
Kazusa: But, that’s why…
it’s fine that I got pissed off, right?
Kazusa: That I got mad without any real meaning?
Haruki: Setsuna is a good girl.
Kazusa: She is. That’s exactly why I’m so lost with her. Completely lost.
Kazusa: We’ll never be able to have the same values, as long as we live.
Kazusa: She could be my worst enemy…
Kazusa: or the greatest friend I’ll ever have. One of those.
Kazusa: As we were leaving, I made a promise with Ogiso.
Kazusa: I told her that if she could fully persuade her parents, then I’d go ahead and join your little Light Music Club.
Haruki: Why… Huh?!
Kazusa: Should I not have? I mean, I can always take it back.
Haruki: I thought you said our plan didn’t have any hope!
Kazusa: …Well, yeah.
Kazusa: Not without me.
Haruki: Thank you.
Thank you, thank you! I mean it!
Narration: I always knew Touma was good at heart…
Kazusa: …You really…
Kazusa: are a pain in the ass, Kitahara.
Don’t neglect your schoolwork, in the meantime!
Kazusa: Yep, a pain in the ass…
